Loneliness is more than a passing feeling—it’s a serious health risk. In fact, in 2023 the U.S. Surgeon General declared that we are facing an epidemic of isolation and loneliness, especially among people over 50.
That may surprise you, but what’s even more shocking: research shows that loneliness can be more harmful than obesity, lack of physical activity, and even smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
On the other hand, even a small amount of activity and social connection can make a life-changing difference. Studies show that spending time with others can reduce cognitive decline by as much as 70%.
Jeannie’s Story: From Isolated to Thriving
Jeannie is a woman I worked with who made the decision to move into assisted living while she was still independent. At first, she wasn’t sure about the move. Many people resist the idea of senior living because they picture losing independence.
But Jeannie quickly discovered the opposite.
She enjoyed the group activities like puzzles and games, but she also found a sense of purpose. She helped set the dining room table, greeted new residents, and gave tours to help others feel welcome. For the first time in years, she felt useful and connected.
Even though her family visited often, Jeannie thrived in ways she hadn’t at home alone. That’s because time with peers—people who share your history, stories, and interests—can’t always be replaced by family visits, no matter how loving.
What This Means for Your Loved One
If your parent or loved one spends most of their time alone, it’s important to ask some deeper questions:
Are they truly thriving at home, or just getting by?
Do they feel lonely or isolated, even if family visits regularly?
Could they benefit from the daily connections and activities that a community provides?
Sometimes, the right senior living environment doesn’t just provide care—it restores a sense of purpose, belonging, and joy.
If you’re wondering whether a community could be the right fit for your loved one, I’m here to help you explore the options. Together, we can make sure your loved one not only stays safe but also truly thrives.
