If you've ever tried to research senior housing options for a loved one, you know how overwhelming it can be. Assisted living, memory care, in-home care, skilled nursing... The choices are endless, and the stakes couldn't be higher. That's where I can help.
Who Is Cheryl?
I'm Cheryl Harris, a Senior Living Family Advocate based in the Kalamazoo area. My role is to help families navigate the world of senior care. Whether your loved one needs a little extra help at home or is ready to transition to a senior living community, I can support your journey. I work with a wide network of community partners, which means my services come at no cost to you.
That's right. Completely free.
What Services Are Offered?
I help families with a wide range of needs, including:
In-home care: Finding the right caregivers so your loved one can stay at home safely
Assisted living placement: Matching your loved one's care needs to the right community
Memory care: Navigating an increasingly competitive and complex placement process
Adult Day Care: A resource many families don't even know exists (learn about our local solutions here)
Home modifications to support aging in place: Like ramps or accessibility upgrades
Transportation resources: Getting your loved one where they need to go
I typically start with a 30 to 60 minute phone call to learn about your loved one's situation, but I'm also happy to meet you at a coffee shop or even come to your home for a more personal, one-on-one conversation.
Why Not Just Pick a Community on Your Own?
This is a great question, and one I hear often. The truth is, senior living communities vary far more than most people realize. Some assisted livings only accept residents up to a certain level of care (learn more about those care levels here), while others can accommodate higher-need individuals who might otherwise be placed in a skilled nursing home.
Knowing which community is the right fit can make an enormous difference in the quality of care your loved one receives.
It's also important to note that these communities are only as strong as their current leadership: their director and nursing staff are the ones training caregivers. When management changes, quality can too. Having an insider's perspective can help you feel less anxiety and more confidence in your decisions.
Memory Care: Harder to Get Into Than You Might Think
One of the most important insights I can share is about memory care. Many families are surprised to learn that memory care communities can, and do, deny applicants.
Loved ones who wander or exhibit behavioral challenges may be turned away, even from facilities designed specifically for dementia care. I can help your family understand the landscape and find communities that are truly a good match, not just the first available option.
