April 11 marks National Pet Day, a time to honor the animals who bring us joy, comfort, and unconditional love. For older adults, that bond can be even more meaningful.
I’ve helped many families transition their loved ones into senior communities, and one thing comes up time and again—“Can my mom bring her dog?” or “My dad won’t move unless his cat can come too.” Pets are more than companions—they are family.
And the benefits of pet companionship for seniors go far beyond emotional support.
Why Pets Matter in Senior Living:
Physical Activity: Walking a dog or tending to a pet encourages daily movement.
Routine & Cognition: Caring for a pet provides structure and stimulates memory and problem-solving.
Emotional Support: Pets ease loneliness and offer a sense of security—especially for those living alone.
Pet Therapy in Senior Communities
The good news? Many assisted living and memory care communities recognize these benefits.
You’ll find:
On-site birds or cats that live among residents
Regular visits from certified therapy dogs
Even community dogs that residents can spend time with
And, most importantly, pet-friendly policies that allow visits from your loved one’s own pet
If you're beginning the search for a senior community and a beloved pet is part of the picture, I’d be happy to guide you.
Everyone deserves to age with love—furry love included.
